Sailing South

Well it's been a bit over three weeks back on the water and I'm anchored off the Hobe Sound National Wildlife refuge near Jupiter Florida. It's currently raining and gusting to 35 or more so I have elected to sit tight for a change and catch up on a few task - one being an update to this blog. Many of you are following the adventures of Steve and Pungo on facebook and for those of you who are not, head on over there for many more images.

What am I doing? I'm headed south on my 26ft Island Packet sailboat, "Pungo". How far and where are unknown at this time. I am sitting at a cross roads right now trying to figure out my next move. Wait for the next southerly to Head out Lake Worth Inlet and over to Grand Bahama Island or catch an up-coming Northerly for an outside run down to Biscayne Bay and then over to Bimini. If I go to Biscayne bay I might take a side trip down to see Cyndi and Scott Perkins who are moored in Marathon Key on their Sailboat "Chips Ahoy". Choices

So far the trip has gone well. It was very cold in the beginning for sure but have been pretty comfortable for the last few days. There are always trials and tribulations on the water and I have had my share but the freedom is worth every penny. As Bernard Moitessier wrote" All in all, I have had a lot of luck in my misfortunes" That would hold true in all aspects of my life.

Well there's a quick update for you and now back to looking for mermaids.

Chasing the Light expedition

Well it's been five weeks of sailing and photographing the coast of North Carolina and I'm still headed north to the NC/ Virginia border. Back in March I found a shoal draft Island Packet sailboat that would be perfect for sailing the shallow coast of North Carolina, so I sailed it back to Wilmington and got to work on the necessary repairs and upgrades. I quickly found out that boat is an acronym for Break Out Another Thousand. After several months of outwardly flowing money and sweat I finally threw off the dock lines and pointed Pungo down the Cape Fear river.

I had been wanting to do some aerial photography of the coast and especially the patterns of the marshes for some time but never seemed to be here when the grasses were green. As a short term solution to getting something from the air I built a remote control camera rig that I send up on a kite. The first few times were quite scary - what am I saying, It's scary every time.

A funny thing about wanting to catch the grasses green, not only for the aerial work but also for regular landscapes is that I am finding I like a lot of the landscapes shots in Black and White.

I hope to be better about posting about my journey here, but for those of you who use facebook you can find me there for more spontaneous postings.

Has finally warmed up enough here to get out on the water and what a beautiful day it was. Is that sunburn? Curtis and I paddle, photograph and solve all the worlds problems whilst dodging kayak eating dredges and tugs. Here are a few pics from the day. Some have been "messed with" in case you didn't notice. The large pipe that I have a shot of Curtis in, was at least a block long. He got on one end and I on the other and we could talk to each other in regular conversation voices! The echoes were CrAZy cRaZY!!!

The pipes, doZer tracks, dredges etc, are a part of the dredging operation in Masonboro Inlet.

In June my niece Tara, gave birth to her first child, Wilhelmina. On new years eve I pulled out my phone to show pictures of her that my niece and sister had sent to me. That was the first time I have ever shown baby pictures. I finally got to see my grand niece in person last week and took some candid images of my own that I wanted to share. Here are two, but be warned that I shot hundreds and there may be more to follow. And just for fun I've included a shot of Chica, a puppy my sister and her husband adopted in Puerto Rico

This video shows the winner of "Ukraine’s Got Talent", Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch.

The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about £75,000.

She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated.

It is replaced by a woman’s face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman’s face appears.

She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier.

This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house.

In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye.

The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine, resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million.

Kseniya Simonova says:
"I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears. And there’s surely no bigger compliment."

Camera? what camera? oh one of those in my bag.

So I'm living in downtown Wilmington and I walk here at least once a day but I have never taken a camera along. The Historic district is a better homes and gardens photographers dream. I however mostly seem to be focused on detail and design for some reason. A typical scenario whilst walking is, hmm nice light, neat subject - wish I had a camera. Today I took a camera along and hopefully will continue to do that on a daily basis. I thought as long as I am shooting I would try to share some on a daily basis. Well see how long this lasts ;)

The last post elicited quite a number of heart felt emails. I want to say thank you to all of the thoughtful readers who responded so warmly. Your kindness was so welcoming. So, Thank you for all your thoughts they meant the world to me.

I once again have made the 1500 mile journey to my Southern home in North Carolina. I am excited to be living downtown two blocks away from the Cape Fear river in the Historic District. I am still unpacking and organizing ( I heard some of you laugh at the thought of me being organized) and hopefully will soon regain some resemblance to normality.

Prompted by my good friend and fellow photographer Jeff Richter, I finally got out and shot a little. We Hiked up, over and around Bare Bluff, a Michigan Nature association preserve near Bete Gris. We also shot on the beach at Bete Gris and on the Hunters Point preserve in Copper Harbor. My blood has evidently thinned a little since my dog sledding days - brrrrr. I have had a lot on my mind since may and especially this last week. Walking along the Lake Superior shore and through the Autumn woods certainly helps to put things into perspective and clarify thoughts. Not having shot much over the last year I am quite rusty and found myself going over all the aspects of creating good images. One thing that immediately popped out was something that I recognized as paralleling some other things in life. A common mistake photographers make is to go into the field, driven to come home with a certain image. This can be fine sometimes, but often it’s like wearing blinders and we fail to see the many other beautiful images right under our noses. Relationships are very similar. If we concentrate on small details of our friends, lovers, family and even strangers we miss their essence, their whole, all that combines to make that person. I have recently been guilty of this and my heart is heavy because of it. A lesson that I remembered too late was one I learned from my Daddy. When I was a teen I ask him “ why don’t you teach momma how to drive a clutch right, she’s going to burn that thing up” he replied “ what’s a clutch among friends”

Another lesson that I just learned is pay attention when you are reformatting a hard drive. I accidently reformatted the wrong drive, the drive with most of the Images I was going to share from those shoots. I think they can be recovered and if and when I do I will share.

Biodegradable corn plastic?

When Al Gore made "Green" the word of the day, I was worried that the fad that was sure to follow would actually weaken the real movement. But I thought it would at least bring it onto more peoples radar. I believe I was right on both accounts. With the complete and thorough lack of ethics in advertising, corporate America didn't disappoint and stuck a "Green" label on everything they possibly could. Being the skeptic that I am, I question quite a few things.

Spring has sprung here in SE North Carolina and I have been out getting some dirt under my fingernails. While digging in a flower bed I found this plastic bottle made from corn that I buried back in 2007. Now I'm sure that making a plastic bottle out of corn is more than likely better than making it out of petroleum, but this bottle obviously did not return completely to the earth in 60 days as advertised. I remember leaving the bottle out in the sun for a month or two then I partially buried it, where it has remained until now. Is it actually made from corn? Was any testing done?

I don't really have a point. I just thought a bottle buried for a couple of years deserved to have it's story heard.

Keweenaw's 4th Annual International Migratory Bird Day in Copper Harbor

If your into birds or Copper Harbor or Brockway mountain or all three you should make it a point to get there for the birding festival. If you've never seen two thousand Hawks, Eagles, Osprey and Accipiters in one day, not to mention loons and every passerine in the book, then you need to go. Besides, there will be music, food and a bonfire in the Community park. It's a jolly good time. So polish up whatever $1100 or $30 pair of field glasses you own and head on out. Oh, I almost forgot about you Photogs. Eye level shots! Merlins bouncing on the thermals right in front of you. You can't miss!

Welcome to 2009

Hola! Well another year has past and hopefully it has left you with some really great memories. My year has had its share of wonderful memories with the last one being a family vacation to Costa Rica in December.

I have put together a slide show from that trip to share with you. Even though I managed to grab a few shots along the way, a lot of those images were from a moving vehicle of some sort - planes, boats, cars and horses(if you can call a horse a vehicle) I was only going to carry a point and shoot this trip, but ended up not being able to at least bring one dslr and two lenses. Both lens were images stabilization lens which really made it possible to shoot from moving platforms. The one critical piece of equipment that somehow did not make the move out of my main camara bag was a polarizer. With all the rain that we had, the plants and everything else really had a sheen on it, which a polarizer would have been a huge asset in removing those bright reflections. Speaking of rain, it did rain - a lot. At one point I was sure that I had pretty much ruined a camera body and lens. A lesson to carry better weather proofing.

Here is a toast to 2009 and all it has in store for us.

Well fall color is just passed peak and leaves are coming down fast. I love walking in the woods after all the leaves are off the trees. The sound of crunchy leaves under foot, the muted browns and greys, the bite of the fall air. For any of you still venturing up, stop in even if the sign says closed. I will be here for another couple of weeks working on a commission.

Apostle Island National Lakeshore

I have been to the Apostles a few times before but it has been a while. Unfortunately our trip only lasted two days because of high wind forecast which would have pinned us down on Stockton Island past when we needed to get the 12 miles back to the mainland. Stockton Island has the largest concentration of black bears

in the country. It seems quite inadvertently that there were three themes to our fall shoots this year. One is that we stayed and shot on an Island in Lake Superior. Two: Rock, rock more rock. Three: Both Islands had the most incredible Tombolo's I have ever been on. I guess all of the cold clear green water could count as four.

A photographer friend commented on how many hours I had in front of me in Photoshop after seeing images from the last shoot. Although I generally only crop, color correct and work with contrast mostly, the process of converting RAW files is sometimes tedious. All of the images that I have shown in the last two post are just the jpgs as they were shot - no post processing. With digital, I shoot differently than with film. Film you shoot to be as close as possible to what you want the end image to look like. With Digital I shoot fairly unsaturated and with as little contrast as the camera will shoot. I also shoot on the light side or the right side of the histogram so as to get as much information as possible. All this translates into fairly bland looking images that usually need something post shoot. Keep this in mind as you look at some of these images. Also there are simple point and shoot shots just to show the area. Can't always have good light for that perfect shot, so we shoot "record" shots as long as we are there.

This is a short slide show of waves crashing on the rocks (and on me) in sequence to hopefully give the feel of actually being on those slippery rocks with waves crashing all around you.

Grand Island and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore shoot

Well I'm back from trip #1 and I'm off to trip #2 tomorrow, the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. I put up a quick edit slide show from Grand Island and Pictured Rocks. It takes a minute or two to load depending on your connection as there are about 150 images. To many, but...

We had some awesome light, howling winds, pretty days, starry nights and a sauna. Thanks to the generosity of Marty in Munising, who gave us a boat and cabin to work from, we were very

comfortable. Jeff and I shot a lot from the boat which was pretty tough going. Shooting digital and using image stabilized lens really increased the odds of getting sharp images. I stretched hard drive and camera batteries past their limits as I shot more than 20 gigs this trip. That's about 1700 images. I knew you were dying to know that. The Light House in some of the shots is the Grand Island East Channel Light . One of the Great Lakes most photogenic lighthouses has been in danger of collapse. But thanks to a small, but dedicated group of local volunteers, including Marty, the Grand Island East Channel Light has been saved for future generations to see.

2008 Fat Tire Festival

It seems an unlikely fact that I co founded this race 15 years ago. Sam Raymond at Keweenaw Adventure (which I also co founded) and his crew have done an awesome job turning this into the event which I imagined. We started out with less than 50 riders and this year we had 330. We were lucky enough to have Steppin' in it play an outdoor gig in our new band shell. By the end of the night we had quite a dust storm kicked up by all the twirling and bouncing. If you weren't here this year better put it on your schedule for next year. Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone for a great show in Eagle Harbor & Copper Harbor. The Weather was absolutely perfect. The Pasi cats http://www.pasicats.com/ played at the Copper Harbor show, check 'em out. Really cool tunes!

Harbor Fest was a blast. The setting on the lake, the grilling out, the huge bonfire and of course great music. Make sure you put it on your to do list for next year. Then... someone else was stupid enough to loan us a boat to use in the Apostle Island National Lake shore so we have to go there as well. Bummer. Hope to come back with some good shots and memories. Ha, no radios so Jeff won't have a reason to whistle off key.

Late July ramblings from Steve Brimm

Howdy everyone, the Gallery is up and running in full swing. Actually it seems to be running faster than me, which is great. Have met a lot of new folks who subscribe to my newsletter that have stopped in to say hello. It has been great to meet and talk with all of you.

It is super good to be up here breathing the "cleanest air in the world" at least that's what the sign on the Harbour Haus say's. Actually, I'm happy to be breathing any air as the brakes went out on my truck towing a big trailer while on the freeway heading up to Copper Harbor - twice! Scary.

I have not gotten out on the water or in the woods a lot, but will soon. The cherries are coming off as well as Service Berries and some early low bush Blue berries. The Thimbleberries are looking good to produce a bunch of fruit. Yum. Fresh wild blueberries on buckwheat pancakes smothered in maple syruple - that is the only word that rhymes with purple, at least according to Roger Miller. The water level in Lake Superior is back up to normal. It has been really low for the last two years.

We are building a mobile band shell and are having a big blowout with over ten bands donating their time as a fundraiser, so come on out and listen to some great tunes, drink some beer and help us pay for Copper Harbor's newest addition.

Well, just thought I'd touch base as some were wondering if I got lost in Ohio or somewhere. Hope you can stop in and say hello this summer.

PS. In case you weren't aware of the meaning of tenacity, this is it. Rebecca paddling with Megan on the big pond. I bought the kayak for her birthday almost two years ago and this is the first time she has physically been able to get it on the water. At this very moment she is getting her herniated disk operated on and hopefully be free from the awful pain she has been in for more than a year. She is currently off Chemo and has that tumor running scared. TENACITY

The truck and trailer are almost loaded, 3600 prints are close to all being signed, and my co-pilot, Bisquit is getting anxious. Me as well. Total Lunar Eclipse, more prints and what eats photogs

Howdy y'all! Hope this note finds everyone happy and healthy despite being bombarded by woes of the economy, steroids and the omnipresent presidential babble. Remember, art is always a good investment, if not for it's market value then for the happiness it brings your soul.

In case you weren't able to catch the Total Lunar Eclipse: February 20, 2008 in person, here is a short sequence I took over the course of the event. It was cloudy so they aren't the best and the timing is not equal, but you can get the idea. ( the angles are not correct either. I did not set the camera up and leave it as I had no place to get a shot of the whole event from one spot. Shooting from the homestead also provided a steady stream of Single Malt Scotch which probably did not help either ;-)
There was a Mackerel sky so I had to time the shutter (I couldn't find my electronic cable release, so it was 2 sec timer with mirror lock -up) so it would open during a break in the clouds - not so easy as the breaks were hardly wide enough to fit the moon in between. Watching the event left me feeling pretty small and insignificant in such a vast universe. I wonder if children growing up in the extreme southern Hemisphere think that they may fall off the earth.

The Pelican shot was a hit. Thanks to John, Kayla, Mary and Rusty.

Now that I've finally gotten around to Changing the "prints coming out of my ears" I hope this new one will be of interest. I shot this image of fragrant Water Lilies at Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan's UP. I like how the puffy Cumulus clouds kind of mirror the flowers. For those of you who have my book, you will find this image in it. I waded thigh deep into the water to get this shot and came out of the water with more than I went in with. Growing up in South Eastern North Carolina until the time I left in the mid 80's, we did not have pelican's pretty much at all. I spent a lot of time sailing, surfing and fishing and don't really recall seeing any.
It wasn't that they didn't belong here, it was because they had been decimated by DDT. I'm sure you all remember what that did to the eggs of a lot of birds, like Eagles and Osprey etc. Since DDT was banned in this country,* I believe in the 70's, many birds including the Pelican have made a dramatic comeback. We don't usually have this kind of concentration of pelicans, due to a very large Menhaden kill as seen in the second and third shot of this little portfolio of shots I took, they flocked in for a free buffet.

The "prints coming out of my ears sale" is still going on. Thanks to Sarah, Jack and Cynthia, hope you enjoy your Agate Beach prints. This next image for sale is of a group of brown Pelicans in a 15x30 print.

A little side note about DDT. Even though it is illegal to use DDT in this country, companies still manufacture it in the US to use on crops in third world countries. Those conventional Banana's in the grocery, yep you
guessed it - they have been treated with DDT. The things they sneak through on unwary citizens. So buy some organic 'nanners and say no to DDT.

Prints coming outta my ears!

I bought a new printer sometime before christmas and between giving it a work out and doing my best to use all the ink up in my other printer (can't waste ink that cost $1700 a gallon) and I am ending up with just a ton of prints. All of the prints are pieces I've never printed before. Some may get put into my print selections, some I did just for the shear fun of it, which is what a lot of them are. These orphan prints as I'll call them need a home, otherwise they will go in a print file and more than likely never be used. So to that end I will offer them at 60% off. I may only have one or two so it will be first come first serve. Please note that I do not sell seconds, all of these prints are just like any other print I sell. They are 100% guaranteed to meet your satisfaction.

I will add a new print either every week or when I sell the previous print. Most of these prints are 16x24 but I do have some panoramas that are 9x24 and a few pieces that are 24x30. This first piece is of an old oil truck sitting in a field somewhere in central UP.

Well that was fun! With just the info I gave, It would be impossible to get the time exact, except by luck. I enjoyed how many took a stab at it anyhow. Some got outside and tried it out for themselves, others researched it on the web, some said well the shadow is long so it's early or late, still others wondered about the direction of the sand swirl - did it have something to do with prevailing winds? and some of you knew all the ingedients. In the end, it was about the journey not the destination.

No one got the exact time, but in the spirit of fun, I'll award an 8x10 matted of this months print to the closest guess. That guess was 8:45 am wait... there was a tie between crazyforflowers and Frank Townsend. If you two would like to recieve a print, please email me with your address.

I was just thinking of some other similar things I could do, like virtual geocaching where you find the loacation by lat/lon and then guess the name of the location and the day and month the image was shot. The image will be the only clue as to the date. Any ideas out there?

January Print of the Month

Sundial

I know what you're thinking, and yes, this is just how I found it. There were a number of these on the beach, but this was one of the more artistic ones. I understand the sand swirls, but the stone being up on it's edge seems odd. I immediately recognised it as a sundial and pointed my compass North so I could see what time it was. This image was shot in the Lake Superior State forest Campground on the way back to the Keweenaw after a couple of weeks shooting on the Canadian shore. Can you can guess what time it was when I shot this? If you can get the the hour and minutes correct you will get this month's image free! Send me an e-mail with your guess. Writing Spider

Writing Spider, Scribbler, Black and Yellow Argiope (Argiope aurantia)

The Garden Spider (Areneus sp.)gets its name because people often find its large web in their backyard fruit and vegetable gardens. These spiders usually build their webs a few feet off of the ground between plants to catch insects that fly past. Garden spiders weave a distinct "zigzag" shape in the center of their webs. Another common name is the Writing Spider probably because someone thought the thickened web strands looked like some kind of writing.
The yellow and black garden spider is one of the largest spiders in our area, sometimes close to 2 inches in length (and that's not including the legs!). Despite their formidable appearance, garden spiders are not dangerous.

These Spiders were a fixture in my days growing up here in South Eastern North Carolina. For some reason they have always carried a bit of mystery to me, like they were special because they could "write" or maybe because if they wrote your name in their web, you were surely doomed.

We had a bumper crop of them this summer, probably because we are one of the few people to use herbicides and fertilizers to keep the grass golf course perfect. It was also one of the driest years on record. It was cool to see so many in one place. Usually they have laid their large brown egg sacks and died by October, but we had one that made a web across the kitchen window and she hung on much longer. Just before Christmas she had not moved for a couple of days so I went out to check on her. I blew very lightly on her and she bolted up to the top of the window and stayed there. The next morning as I made coffee I glanced out to see if she had returned to the middle of her web. She was nowhere in sight. I feared the worst and felt bad for having disturbed her in her last days. After my Espresso was pressed, I walked out expecting to find her dead on the back deck but instead she was wrapping up her third egg sack. She had already laid two which I thought was amazing because I had never seen one fill more than one egg sack. She rebuilt her web and lasted until after the new year.

If you find one in your garden, let 'em be - they're the good guys!

Greetings friends and family,

As the New Year approaches I find myself only three and a half weeks away from my departure to Kenya where as many of you already know, I will volunteer at the Watoto Wa Kwetu Trust and Children’s Art Center in the slums of Mathare. I managed to buy a ticket and put away enough money to sustain myself during the 6 weeks in which I will be there. This journey comes after 9 months of correspondence and planning with the founder of the center. I’ve been working very hard the past 3 months in order to raise funds to purchase some badly needed equipment and materials for the center. These items are better purchased in the US as the costs are much higher once in Kenya. You have most likely received several emails by now regarding this worthy project and my efforts to assist them. This will be the last one as time is of the essence and if I do not receive additional assistance within the next couple of weeks it may be too late to collect the items needed.

Just for the record, in order to better assist Watoto Wa Kwetu Trust and Children’s Art Center in the future, my friend Stacy Edwards and I are in the process of applying for our own 501 c3 status for our organization called Baobab Seed. This new organization should be up and running by early summer, allowing us to partner with Watoto Wa Kwetu and apply for US Grants to benefit their projects in Kenya. We will also be working to assist women in Kenya to learn skills that will lead to financial independence in order to sustain themselves and their children. At that time all donations made through Baobab Seed will also be tax deductible.

RECENTLY ONE OFF OUR NEW VOLUNTEERS ASKED ME HOW TO RESPOND TO THE QUESTIONS WHICH I TOO GET ASKED EVERY DAY ABOUT THE WORK WE DO IN KENYA...I FELT THIS WAS A GREAT QUESTION AND WORTH SHARING AS MANY OF YOU MAY WONDER THE VERY SAME THING…She wrote to say that many of her friends and family have been asking questions about our choice to support programs that provide creative arts, when it seems obvious to assume that most of these children probably struggle just to get their basic necessities met, be in need of food, water and shelter. Well here is what I advised her to consider and share with people who ask this question; “There are in fact many new and established organizations that specifically work to assist the children(some of whom are orphaned) to have the basics.There still remains so very much to be done in all these areas.Though I will never argue that one must have the basics for thebody to survive, the soul is more complex. With nurture, by means of food, water and shelter there is still the need to nurture the soul by means of expression We desire to offer a vehicle for the children to dream beyond the moment. We believe...if you can dream it you canfind a way to make it happen, but if there is no dream, one may just fell a victim of their environment with no hope of something better. Creativity is a doorway to hope. I hope this helps. Greetings all! As promised, I've finished the full version of the Keweenaw Summer screensaver. There are 40 images that, except for the sample shots in the last post, no one has ever seen these. There is a bit of a twist however. I have decided to make this a donation to support the art programs for disadvantaged children in Kenya. I know everyone has their hands out this time of year and this was certainly not planned that way, but as long as I have you thinking in that direction, I would like to make a plea. Our community of elders in Hospices, rest homes, nursing homes and senior centers, are always in need of your kindness and love, but this time of year especially. Bringing clothing, toiletries, or most importantly, an hour or more of your time to simply spend with someone, talking, singing, or whatever you like will do wonders. Some facilities have "Angel trees" so you may pick a name from the tree and sponser that person. Once you see their faces light up, you will be hooked. Please go to a facility near you this holiday season and give your time and heart.

Lastly, in case you you were not aware of how hard we nature photogs have it, I thought I'd give you a glimps. BTW if you ever run into this particular fellow, don't loan him your Fuji 6x17 or even your point and shoot.
